Road to Wembley 17/18: 1st Qualifying Round

We are through the preliminary rounds, and now we get into the proper qualifying rounds. Alright, so it’s not that straightforward a way to number the rounds, but it works, and our FA Cup Reporters continue their individual Roads to Wembley. This time, we have fewer games, but goals galore! Continue reading Road to Wembley 17/18: 1st Qualifying Round

Road to Wembley 2017/18: Extra-Preliminary Round

Wembley to Wembley: Carlisle United v Everton

It has taken until the Fourth Round, but we have finally reached the top. It was difficult to imagine the Premier League when we started back in August with Hillingdon Borough v Wembley, but 10 rounds and 15 matches into the journey, we would spend the day watching Premier League quality. We got to see Brunton Park, having been denied that pleasure in the last round by Storm Desmond, which flooded the charming old city and forced the club’s temporary relocation to Lancashire. We would be joined by nearly 20,000 to see the arrival of Lukaku, Barkley et al. We would be back on the terrace after our Third Round hiatus in a modern, identikit stadium. This would be special. Wembley to Wembley – Hanwell Town v Mildenhall Town

The FA Cup Second Qualifying Round brought us, once again, to West London. After bidding farewell to North Greenford in the last round, Hanwell Town represent their biggest rivals and are only just down the road. The sun beat down on what turned out to be a glorious day – although it doesn’t quite feel right to be wearing sunglasses at a football match – and despite the heavy traffic we negotiated our way into the car park. Hanwell Town, as we discovered, have a long history and were forced to disband in the 1920s by the F.A. for (imagine this) daring to pay their players. Things have certainly moved on since then, but not as far for these sides as for the megabucks in the Premier League. Continue reading Wembley to Wembley – Hanwell Town v Mildenhall Town

Wembley to Wembley – Mildenhall Town v North Greenford United

For the third successive round, our F.A. Cup journey has served up a replay. If this continues for too much longer I might be getting a letter from my bank┬ámanager, but for now it was an interesting distraction from the work week, and Mildenhall isn’t too far from the office. Perhaps most famous for the RAF base to the north of the town, Mildenhall is charming even on a wet Tuesday evening. And it was very wet. I laughed when I saw the rain over Essex, as I drove through Suffolk, but it quickly caught up to me. Luckily it didn’t make the football a damp squib. Wembley to Wembley – North Greenford United v Wembley

For the second time in succession, the FA Cup has thrown up a replay on a Tuesday night. After the scrappy 1-1 draw on Saturday, I must say I was apprehensive about the thought of travelling across London for another 90 minutes of football. I needn’t have been. Unfortunately, due to a family emergency, I was flying solo for this one, but I think the match made up for that. Continue reading Wembley to Wembley – North Greenford United v Wembley

Wembley to Wembley – Wembley v North Greenford United

Our journey continued this weekend, without actually going anywhere. Following their 2-1 replay victory over Hillingdon Borough, Wembley entered the Preliminary Round of the FA Cup against North Greenford United. The tie represented the closest derby of the round, with North Greenford making an epic return journey of just under 3 miles, and we returned to the familiar territory of Vale Farm for what we hoped would be an entertaining tie.
